Indiana Celebrates 26th Annual Disability Awareness Month
This March the state of Indiana celebrated its 26th Disability Awareness Month. The initiative is led by the Indiana Governor’s Council For People with Disabilities. With slightly more than 19% of the Indiana population having a disability, the goal of the month is to increase awareness and promote integration, inclusion and independence for those with disabilities. Every year the council develops a unique theme and this year’s theme is “I’m Not Your Inspiration.” The theme is trying to say that individuals with disabilities who are successful do not need to be put on a pedestal as they often are. By putting these individuals on a pedestal it is adding to the idea that individuals with disabilities are often not successful, which should not be the case. The Council provides free resources for anyone who want to plan an event to celebrate the month. Learn more about Indiana’s Disability Awareness Month here
