Company Spotlight: Special Books For Special Kids

Special Books for Special Kids was started by special education teacher Chris Ulmer after he realized that his students’ stories and talents were not being shared with the world. He felt that without the backing of a publisher, the stories would not be told, so he decided to become that publisher. What started as a book series has grown to become a multimedia movement. The mission of Special Books for Special Kids is similar to ours at Realabilities: to “spread empathy, understanding and acceptance for neurodiverse individuals.” Chris Ulmer is now on the road spreading his message through speaking engagements. Most recently he visited the university of our intern as part of the Next Steps Ambassadors Program at Vanderbilt University, which pairs Vanderbilt undergraduates with Next Step students. Next Steps is a two-year post-secondary education program for students with disabilities. Chris spoke to students, faculty and staff about how Vanderbilt can become a more inclusive environment for neurodiverse individuals.
